The Book Guardians

Writing achievements

An open ancient grimoire with magical symbols, a glass cup of dark liquid, and old scrolls amidst plants.

London, December 1985. A sixteenth-century book arrives at FRANKIE WALSH's Putney bookshop and writes a message in its own margins: YOU'VE DONE THIS BEFORE.

Frankie is the last in a worldwide network of Book Guardians — custodians sworn to protect certain dangerous texts from those who would use them to rewrite time and loss. Her parents died for this cause. The man who brought the book to her door stole it from his mother, who moves through mirrors and has spent decades trying to unmake a grief she cannot accept. Frankie has five nights to sever the book's hold before it becomes part of her. She has lived this before. This time she intends to choose differently.

THE BOOK GUARDIANS is an adult fantasy novel, 85,000 words, currently on submission.

Me

Me

Margot DeCoursey

I'm an Australian writer based in Melbourne, working in the space where the ordinary world runs alongside a stranger one.

The Book Guardians grew from a long obsession with custodianship — with what it costs to protect something larger than yourself, and with what London sounds like at Christmas when everything is about to change. I am drawn to characters who carry more than they should, and to grief that refuses to stay in its allotted place.

By day I work as an educator. My short fiction has won the Brisbane Writers' Festival 21 Pages competition and the Alliance Française French Film Festival writing competition, and been shortlisted for the NYC Midnight Microfiction Competition.
